Today is Christmas Eve, the night us Norwegians traditionally celebrate Christmas, and thus today's Advent Calendar gift is the last one. The Harry Potter themed Christmas tree is now complete, but for one thing - the tree topper. So today's gift in my daughter's Harry Potter themed Christmas tree Advent Calendar is the tree topper!
To me it was quite clear from early on what would be the tree topper on her Harry Potter themed Christmas tree, but I've seen other great ideas around the internet as well. My favourite crafters over at Epbot used to have Hedwig the snowy owl as their tree topper, but this year they made Fawkes the phoenix. I've also seen quite a few trees with a Sorting Hat tree topper, one with the Golden Snitch, one with Dobby the House Elf and even one with Professor Dumbledore!
My husband really wanted us to do a Weasley, you remember, for their Christmas tree topper they stun a garden gnome, dress it in a ballet gown, put wings on it and paint it golden. Like this one! (Click the image for the source where I found this art.)
That would have been a hoot for sure, but all along I'd really had my heart set on a Deathly Hallows tree topper. In Norway practically everybody uses a star as their tree topper, and in my opinion a Deathly Hallows symbol resembles a star the most. I needed professional help to make this one, though. I drew a template on a piece of paper, and am fortunate enough to have a brother in law who can take almost any template you feed into the computer where he works and laser-cut it out from a metal plate. So he did, and I couldn't have been happier about how it turned out.
My husband found a metal rod in his shop and made a slit in one end matching the thickness of the Deathly Hallows symbol, and it fastens to the stem of the tree with cable ties.
If you don't have access to a lasercutter like I do, I'm sure you could make something similar out of a thin, wooden plate, and just spraypaint it.

Please come back tomorrow for pictures of the finished tree -
plus a bonus ornament for those of you who celebrate on the 25th!
