My daughter is a Gryffindor, so for her very first piece of Harry Potter themed Christmas tree ornament I decided to knit a Gryffindor scarf-like garland to wrap around her tree from top to bottom. This garland had to be pretty long, and took quite a while to make. To make it as quickly and easily as possible I decided to use a Knitting Nancy. A Knitting Nancy can also be known as a knitting spool, knitting mushroom, peg knitter, knitting nobby/noddy/knoddy, Bizzy Lizzy and probably many other names as well. I remember how my beloved late grandmother taught my how to make and use one of these when I was a little girl, we hammered four nails into an old wooden thread spool, and I made metres and metres of a thin, knitted tube/braid we called "horse reigns".
I wanted the Gryffindor scarf garland to be a little thicker than the horse reigns I made as a child, and instead of spending time making my own 8-prong Knitting Nancy I found a very inexpensive plastic one on eBay (these specific item-links may expire after some time, and I will not update them, please use ebay search-function).
Of course you could make your own, over at Wayne's This and That there is a detailed article on the history of Knitting Nancies, how to make one and how to use them. There are also a bunch of other DIYs and ideas both on Pinterest and google.
With my Nancy, which I found really easy to use, 2 balls of Gryffindor dark red and one ball of Gryffindor yellow wool yarn I made nearly 10 metres of Gryffindor scarf Christmas tree garland, my daughter's Harry Potter Christmas Tree Advent Calendar gift for December 2nd.
Please come back tomorrow for a Harry Potter themed Christmas Ornament you quite easily can make yourself!
