I found the inspiration for today's Harry Potter themed Christmas Ornament by searching for Harry Potter Christmas Ornaments on Google Images, where you can find lots of wonderful DIY ornaments made by brillant crafters all over the world. Making some variety of the Hogwart's House Point Hourglasses as a Christmas ornament seemed like a good idea, and by looking at various images under the search term "Harry Potter House Points Ornament" I came up with a project that I liked the look of. The original ideas are probably by some of the wonderful crafters on Etsy or something like that, but I haven't been able to trace the ideas back to their originator, thus credit unfortunately cannot be given.
I started by purchasing some long, sleek, corked glass vials/test tubes from eBay, 20ml, 22x80mm. When they arrived, I screwed a tiny, silver eyelet screw in the middle of each cork. I also purchased a lot of small glass spacer beads in the four different house colours, dark red, warm yellow, green and dark blue, and poured the beads into the glass vials. I fastened the corks with contact cement, to minimise the risk of the corks coming off when the finished ornaments are hung on the Christmas tree, as they are a bit heavy.
I looked around a bit for house crest labels for the vials, and found out that there are quite a few versions out there. I opted for these, resized, printed and cut them out carefully, before using Mod Podge to glue them to the vials and to give them a protective seal/top coat.
To finish off the ornaments, I tied house-coloured satin ribbons around the neck of the vials.
That could have been it, but after looking some more at similar ornaments made by others I saw that some had fastened small charms or pendants of each house's animal to their ribbons. I thought that looked very nice and made the ornaments even more special, so I went for it!
I bought animal earrings on eBay and Etsy (badgers were the hardest to find, eBay failed me there, but Etsy saved the day), and attached them to my ornaments via short chains, as i thought that looked better than to fasten them directly to the ribbon. Of course I ultimately added some ornament hooks for hanging.
Now, THAT's a wrap!
